Title: Win some, lose some

March 3, 2010

Tennis great Jimmy Connors was noted for saying that he “hated to lose more than he loved to win”. I can guarantee you that feeling is shared this morning by the Hickman County Lady Bulldog basketball team. The stellar Lady Bulldog basketball season ended last night with a two point, last second shot loss to Camden Central. This team of young ladies, along with Coaches Corey and Stacey Barrett, Brittney Powers, and Wesley Huddleston, have been tremendous representatives of our high school and community of Centerville, Tennessee. The 2009-2010 installment of the Lady Bulldog team were District 12AA regular season champions as well as District 12AA tournament champions. We as a small town could not be prouder of this bunch.

Nobody likes to lose. In fact, I don't know that I have ever heard anyone say that they enjoyed not winning. But, the crux of the matter is this ..... everybody eventually loses. Whether it is a ballgame, a business deal, or some type of a relationship situation, sooner or later, we all end up in the “L” column. There is not a one of us who does not want to be the one hoisting the trophy at the end of the game in Gatorade soaked clothes. And on the flip side, no one wants to be the one in tears at the end of the contest because they came up just a hair short ..... but, such is life. You win some, you lose some, and regardless of the outcome either way, the sun still rises the next day.

Though we may not want to recognize it at times, in a lot of ways we actually benefit more from losing than we do winning. It does not take character to hold your head up after a victory, but it sure does after a defeat. It does not take a great deal of heart to walk out of the locker room with your head held high after a win, but it sure does after a loss. The Bible is full of losses ..... all kinds of them. God allowed his very best servants to go through what seemed to be defeats of great magnitude, only for them to find out later that those losses were actually magnificent victories. Flip through the Bible sometime and read about Joseph, Job, and David. Study the life of Peter, Stephen and Paul. In addition to these, God worked through the lives of so many. Losses produce character, patience, wisdom and understanding. James, the brother of our Lord, tells us in the book that bears his name that it is really only through trials and tribulations that we learn these life lessons. When you think about it, it all really boils down to this ..... We should be concerned with one victory and one victory only. I wonder if they have Gatorade in heaven?
