Title: What Are You Hungry For?
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
Matthew 5:6
I’ve been hungry and thirsty for many different things in my life...from sugar and other sweets to success and satisfaction. These are just some of the things that I have hungered and thirsted for, but none of these were ever guaranteed to be filled. I remember times as a kid when I hungered for cookies, but didn’t get them. Other times I’ve been thirsty for job opportunities that I didn’t get. I believe that I’m not the only one who knows what it’s like to hunger and thirst for things and not be filled. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a guarantee that hungers would be filled, and thirst would be quenched? Well, we do at least when it comes to righteousness. We are told this by Jesus, Himself, in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Not maybe, or if they’re lucky, but will be filled.
What does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness? It means to take a stand and pursue what is just, moral, and right. It means killing the appetite for deceiving others, and putting them down to make yourself look better. It means craving opportunities to serve others, and help to bring them comfort, peace and joy.
We aren’t guaranteed that hunger for sweets and thirsts for success will be quenched, but we are guaranteed to be filled if we are hungry and thirst for what is right. So, because of that we know what to be hungry for.
Thankful for You, Brandon
