Wouldn’t it be cool if you could say you had witnessed some of history’s greatest events unfold right before your very eyes? Would it not have been neat to have witnessed Cal Ripken Jr.’s breaking of Lou Gehrig’s consecutive game streak, or even more recently, been in San Francisco to see Barry Bonds (whether you like him or not), hit home run number 756 to surpass Hank Aaron as Major League Baseball’s all-time home run leader? Perhaps you would have like to have seen the Berlin Wall come down in 1989 or watched in person the first Space Shuttle go into space in 1981. Maybe some would like to get in a time machine and go back to 1776 to witness the signing of the Declaration of Independence, or even back to the first century to be a part of Biblical events as they unfolded. It would have been quite amazing to have been in a crowd of thousands of people who were being fed by just a few fish and a loaf or two of bread, or walk behind Moses on dry land where there once was an endless body of water. Whatever your cup of tea, we all would probably like to say we had witnessed, or been a part of something special……something that would go down in history as one of the greatest days ever.

Well, if you were at the Fairfield Church of Christ on Sunday, August 12, 2007, you can honestly say that you were a part of one of the greatest days in its storied history. 413 precious souls gathered together, shoulder to shoulder, to be a participant in one of the most awesome worship services this Church has ever had. The singing was strong, powerful, and moving. As always, Darin did an amazing job of setting the tone for the services. One gentleman remarked that our “music” as he called it, was some of the best he had ever heard. Anyone who says that acappella singing can’t stir your emotions should have been in attendance…..they would have left with a different attitude. The prayers that were led were full of appreciation for our visitors and thankfulness to our Lord. Two determined family men responded to the Lord’s invitation to re-dedicate their lives to their God and their families, and one wonderful family placed membership. I’m sure the angels are still rejoicing….I know we are.

Following Bible class, a record number of folks gathered together in the fellowship hall for a grilled hamburger lunch. Those who are in the know tell me that there have probably never been that many people in the basement at one time. I want to personally say THANK YOU to all those who helped grill the burgers and hot dogs, to those who brought the side fixins, to those who helped pour drinks, prepare and set out desserts, take out trash, wash dishes, clean up tables, and I’m sure a thousand other things I can’t remember. Without all of you, and you know who you are, this event would not have been the success it was. I also want to thank ALL OF YOU for your warm handshakes and friendly greetings that you gave out so freely to our guests. I have already had so many people tell me that they were made to feel right at home and welcomed from the minute they were here. The ride was quite hot, but very enjoyable. It’s an exhilarating feeling to be in a riding group with fifty or so other bikes. Everyone rode safely and courteously. A special thank you also goes out to the Roy McCoy’s (Sr. and Jr.) for trailing behind in their Jeep with cold, bottled waters. Some of us might not have made it the entire way without them. No doubt you were all up the challenge and responded to the call just the way I knew you would! Give yourselves a pat on the back and a job well done!

We’ve now planted the seeds. Let’s pray that they fell on fertile soil and that God will give the increase. God promised us that if we do our part, he will do his. So, what’s next?

Go the extra mile-Devin
