Title: I can't decide .....

OK, I have to admit I’m softening up on the dude a little bit. I will be the first to tell you that I was the leader of the “I’m sick of hearing about Brett Favre un-retiring” parade. I was of the opinion that he was a great quarterback for the Green Bay Packers and that he should have left well enough alone when he retired after having played for the Cheese heads for most of his entire NFL career. I mean, one would think that after he set a ton of records, won a bunch of MVP awards, and was able to complete pro football’s greatest achievement when he won a Super Bowl (XXXI), that this farm boy from Mississippi would simply fade off into the sunset in his Wrangler Jeans ….. but NOOOOOOOO! Now a couple of years and a couple of teams later, he dons the Viking purple in quest of yet another Super Bowl opportunity.

All that having been said, as I mentioned earlier, I’m starting to lighten up on him. It’s not that I don’t like him …… he seems like he would be a pretty good guy to hang out with. But, it was just all the waffling back and forth ….. I just couldn’t take it anymore. But then, a couple of days ago I saw him in a Sears commercial that has put him in a new light with me. The spot shows him standing in the TV aisle of the store trying to decide which model to buy. The decision is clearly a difficult one for him as there are many different ones from which to choose. The jest of the commercial is that he pretty much stands in front of those televisions all day long until closing time when he still can’t make up his mind on which one to purchase (a comedic poke in the eye at his continual inability to decide whether he wants to play football or not).

New Mr. Viking quarterback has risen a step or two on the ladder with me because it’s obvious that even he is aware of some of his own frailties. He is essentially acknowledging (I’m sure with a big paycheck from Sears) that he has a problem with making clear choices and sticking with them ….. and at the end of the day, isn’t that really all any of us can do? The first step in overcoming any addiction, trouble or difficulty within our own selves is becoming self-aware of that issue(s). How else can we treat an illness if we don’t know what the illness is? It doesn’t matter if everyone else in the entire world knows what our problem is if we can’t clue in on it ourselves.

Hopefully we, like Brett Favre, can finally come to a place in life where we can at least acknowledge that which in some way troubles and hinders our lives. Identification of such things is the first step in the healing process. Perhaps this very minute you have something going on in your life that is a major obstacle in your relationship with God or someone that you deeply love. Perhaps this very second you feel the glare of a serious issue that needs to be dealt with in a very real and direct way. And just maybe, perhaps this is the day that you finally decide to do something about it.
Am I gonna become a Minnesota Viking fan because Brett Favre is their quarterback? Probably not. Am I gonna go out and buy a # 4 purple jersey? Definitely not. Do I now like the Vikings # 4 a tad more because he seems a little more human to me? I think I do. This much I know …… I have a whole lot more riding on my decision to deal with some of my issues than a new television set.
